ÂÜÀòÊÓƵ Past President James Russell reflects on the accomplishments of the Dalrymple-Champneys Cup and Medal winners and urges #TeamVet to nominate exceptional colleagues.
I know you should never meet your heroes and so I should be grateful that the one and only opportunity I will ever have to be in the room with previous Dalrymple-Champneys Cup winners was on Zoom. This way, I’ve technically not met them!
This is an awesome award, presented for work in our profession which will encourage the advancement of veterinary science and medicine. The winners will all have also disseminated this knowledge of veterinary science and medicine into our profession. In short, they are the living textbooks of what we do.
The award is agreed each year by a committee made up entirely of previous winners, chaired by the ÂÜÀòÊÓƵ President. Wow! What a thing to do.
What is much more amazing is the calibre of attainment and achievement within our profession which has helped us all to move forward from the days of the black drench and the red drench to where we are today (when sometimes I also use the blue drench!).
Some of these people work in academia and make regular appearances in Vet Record. Others might be practitioners who have unearthed some gem in their working life that they have shared far and wide (my particular favourite is my friend in New Zealand who has a lube pump named after them in recognition of their work in obstetrics). They might work in research, pioneering new treatments, or in government, navigating us through exotic disease outbreaks.
However they use their MRCVS they will be somebody who, when you think of their name, you stop and reflect on just how much they have impacted on your life, and the life of others.
If I’ve described anyone you know in my words above, then please do let us know. We would love to be overwhelmed by nominations again this year and give Justine as this year’s President the same joy I had reading all about the amazing work that is done.
